Good biographies focus on one aspect of a person’s life, and that’s exactly what 'The Apprentice' no In this case we are talking about Donald Trump’s business relationship with his lawyer Roy Cohn. It’s a great narrative: Trump, eager but inexperienced, learns Cohn’s dirty tricks on business deals. And when he’s learned all he needs to learn, he turns his back on the one who made him who he is. It’s a great drama and a lot of fun to watch.

Their courtship is also a very entertaining part of the film

Ali Abbasi really succeeds in recreating the “greed is good” feel of the era when honesty and integrity gave way to money and profit. Events move quickly for both Trump and the viewer, especially in the first part of the film. It’s great cinema to watch Trump go from a simple rent collector in his father’s apartment complex to a powerful real estate developer. In the second part, Cohn is less important to Trump, who meets with Ivan. In a way, Jeremy Strong, who plays Roy Cohn, really steals the show.

Yes and no

He is absolutely excellent as the ruthless lawyer without any scruples. His three business rules will become essential in Trump’s career. Sebastian Stan is also amazing in the role of Trump: he shows typical Trumpian mannerisms without exaggeration. Even the way he speaks is accurate without becoming a parody. Is this a political film?

The film ends in 1986 when Cohn dies

It is basically the story of a businessman who operated in New York. Trump hadn’t even begun his TV career then, let alone his political aspirations. But Abbasi couldn’t resist the temptation to include a 1980 interview with Ron Barrett in which he jokes about the presidential election. And the film begins with Nixon’s famous words, “You can’t be a crook.” A subtle but crystal clear message.
